Build an edit around the message

Start by deciding what the viewer should understand when the video ends. Choose the clips that explain that idea, put them in a useful order and trim material that repeats it. An opening shot should give the viewer a reason to keep watching, while each later shot should add something: a detail, a demonstration or a change in the story.

Make a first cut before spending time on effects. Check that spoken words are easy to hear, subtitles match the audio and any on-screen text remains readable at the size people will watch. Preview the final crop too; a title or face that looks well placed in a wide frame can sit outside a vertical version.

Some projects also need new visual material.
