From a high vantage point, an expansive, dimly lit, and ancient space stretches out, seemingly untouched and forgotten. Echoes of the past reverberate through its vast emptiness, with scarce natural light seeping in through minuscule windows in the high ceiling. In the heart of this cavernous room stands a plaster sculpture shaped like a traditional wooden living room bookcase. It's slightly deteriorated, exposing parts of its metallic framework beneath the crumbling surface. An old 16mm film projector casts a black and white video onto this sculpture, depicting a half-naked Portuguese girl adorned with an urban hat. To the right, a sophisticated folding screen unfolds gracefully, crafted from paper with a sturdy wooden frame, evocative of a six-panel Japanese Nanban screen. Upon it, a lively color video portrays a biblical figure, draped in red and wearing sunglasses, set against a serene blue sky. On the left, there is a charming puppet theater, constructed from rich Alentejo textiles and fine wood. Tiny "Bonecos de Santo Aleixo" puppets are depicted at rest within this miniature stage, their size diminutive compared to the other sculptures. Despite their stature, these sculptures are dwarfed by the immense room, their presence illuminated only by the subtle glow of the projector beams, with the faintest whispers of daylight filtering down from above.
