How to Convert HEIC to JPEG

High-Efficiency Image Container (HEIC) files are Apple’s default photo format on recent iPhones and iPads. While HEIC offers excellent compression and quality, it isn’t universally supported. Converting to the widely compatible JPEG format ensures your images open everywhere—websites, older operating systems, design tools, and more.

TL;DR — Fastest Way

Need it done in seconds?
➡️ Use the BasedLabs HEIC-to-JPEG converter.
Upload → download → done.

Why Convert HEIC to JPEG?

| Reason | Detail | | ------ | ------ | | Universal compatibility | JPEG opens on virtually every device, browser, CMS, and design tool. | | Web uploads | Many websites still reject HEIC; JPEG ensures smooth uploads. | | Old software | Legacy photo editors and Windows versions lack native HEIC support. | | Sharing | Avoid “can’t open this file” messages when sending pics to friends or clients. |

Method 1 — Online (BasedLabs)

The simplest option—no installs, no settings, just a browser.

  1. Go to the converter: BasedLabs HEIC-to-JPEG.
  2. Upload one or more .heic files (drag-and-drop or file picker).
  3. Wait a moment while the server converts them securely.
  4. Download the resulting .jpeg files—ready to use or share.

Tip: Bulk upload is supported. File-size limits are generous, but for huge batches see Method 5: Bulk Conversion via Command Line.

Method 2 — macOS (Finder or Preview)

Finder Quick Action (macOS Ventura / Sonoma)

  1. Select your HEIC files in Finder.
  2. Right-click → Quick Actions → Convert Image.
  3. Choose JPEG and set quality (Medium ≈ 1 MB, High ≈ 2 MB for a 12 MP photo).
  4. Click Convert—macOS outputs JPEG versions in the same folder.

Preview Export (all macOS versions)

  1. Double-click a HEIC to open in Preview.
  2. File → Export… → Format: JPEG → save.
  3. For multiple images, open them all in Preview’s sidebar, Select All (⌘-A), then export.

Method 3 — Windows 11/10

Photos App (Windows 11)

  1. Open the HEIC in Photos (installs HEIF codecs automatically if missing).
  2. Save as → select JPEG.
  3. Pick a destination folder and save.

One-Time Codec + Paint (Windows 10)

  1. Install “HEIF Image Extensions” from Microsoft Store (free).
  2. Open the HEIC in Paint → File → Save as → JPEG.

Method 4 — iPhone & iPad Settings

Prevent HEIC at the source or convert on export.

Shoot Future Photos as JPEG

SettingsCameraFormats → select Most Compatible (JPEG/H.264).

Convert on AirDrop / Share

SettingsPhotosTransfer to Mac or PC → choose Automatic.
iOS will send JPEG versions when sharing to non-Apple devices.

Method 5 — Bulk Conversion via Command Line

Great for hundreds or thousands of images.

macOS or Linux (Homebrew)

brew install imagemagick heifenc
magick mogrify -format jpg *.heic
